THE WAR ON CLIMATE

Unveiling the Uncounted

Costs of Conflict

DID YOU KNOW THAT ALL YOUR BELIEFS AND ACTIONS
ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE TO DATE HAVE BEEN BASED
ON AN INCOMPLETE TRUTH?

And what if those who wish to keep the
complete truth hidden have been
distracting you, while using you as a
smokescreen? The reality is that we have
all been fighting against the odds, while
"they" have been fighting, too – against us
and the planet.

This is the story few dare to tell.

Everyone needs access to the scientific

truth, with honest accountability of all actors,

to enable the world to address this climate
emergency urgently

Likewise, there has been insufficient focus on identifying and publishing all the key sources of
global carbon emissions within the annual agendas of the United Nations Climate Change
Conference of the Parties (COP).

To get it on the international agenda, global public support remains critical, and a worldwide
movement must be created to highlight the significant adverse impacts of conflict.

It's time to break the cycle. Climate policy must confront military emissions, integrate
sustainability into post-conflict recovery, and enforce environmental protections under
international law. We can’t build a liveable future without fully informed climate action.

This conversation has begun, but the work continues.

KEYNOTE speaker:

Dr. Naledi Pandor is a distinguished South African politician,
educator, and academic, currently serving as Chair of the Nelson
Mandela Foundation. She was Minister of International Relations and
Cooperation from 2019 to 2024, among a long history of positions in
public office, and was a former Member of Parliament since 1994.

A leading advocate on climate change and international justice, Dr.
Pandor played a pivotal role in urging the International Criminal
Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants against Israeli and Hamas
leadership for war crimes committed during recent conflicts—a call
that the ICC subsequently acted upon. At the 2019 UN General
Assembly, she emphasised the need for a “coordinated and integrated
response to climate change for effective management of its inevitable
impact.”

Dr. Pandor’s extensive experience in governance, education, and
international relations brings invaluable insight to discussions on the
intersection of conflict, climate, and global governance.

THERE IS NO MATERIAL CLIMATE POLICY

WITHOUT COUNTING THE COSTS OF CONFLICT

We are advised to modify our lifestyles to be less carbon-intensive. Companies and media focus on ESG and
“net zero” targets. Governments discuss the need for a significant energy transitions.

Yet, our actions are a drop in the ocean.

This is because they are completely negated by the overwhelming presence, actions, and aftermath of the
global military industry.

Just imagine … Operating an Abrams tank for one day is enough to fuel a small family car for a whole year.

Global military
forces are
responsible for
approximately 6% of
all carbon emissions,
compared to global
aviation at 2%

greenhouse gas
emissions from the
military alone are
enough to
warm the
planet to 1.5 degrees
above pre-industrial
levels by
2030

One year of the
Ukraine conflict
resulted in 120
million tonnes of
CO2e, comparable to
that of Belgium’s
annual emissions
